blindingtrust: (Expecting something)

This wasn't going to be like a cheesy movie. It was just the sort of thing that happened one day. Carol was moving out west because she got a new job and her father needed her. Ivy would miss the older woman who didn't bat an eye at anything that happened in the Gotham City District Attorney's office.

Of course Ivy was just the Assistant District Attorney. It was a big deal for her but a highly stressful job. She had tried to let Carol talk her into switching to tea but every murder case that she had to cope with that should have chilled her blood had her going straight for the coffee like a life line.

Today she was going to be meeting her newest secretary. This was going to be an adventure at least. She smoothed her suit jacket out slightly as she stepped off the elevator and the heels of her shoes made a delightfully soft clicking sound as she made her way down to her office and went in to start getting ready for the work day.

Whoever they were sending her way should be here soon enough. She faintly recalled that this man used to work with the Austin police department. She hoped they didn't have a heavy Texan accent. That would be a pity.

This was Jim's third transfer since he left his birthplace. McCook, Kansas, then a short stint in Tioga, North Dakota before heading to Austin, Texas. He walking into Ivy's office, pink box and tray in hand, speaking in his normal loud, assertive voice.

"Miss Weaver? Hi, Jim Brooklynn, your new secretary. I brought coffee and donuts. I wasn't sure what you liked yet, so I just got a few sugar pucks and some sprinkled ones. I know it's clichéd, but they're damn tasty anyway."

He saw her and nodded. I'm not letting this job be like the last three. I just hope she's more like Barney and less like Mike or Greg.

Oh good she was glad that his voice was loud. It would carry well when she needed to talk to him at least. She leaned back in her seat and found herself smiling slightly.

"It's good that you're on time," she said folding her hands in front of her. "And thank you for the donuts. I'm not a picky person when it comes to food. You'll find I keep late hours and so I tend to survive off of food that I know isn't very good fr me."

She takes a deep breath. "Did they tell you that I am blind?"

"I wasn't told. I was going to guess that or 'Action Movie Star' based on the sunglasses. That's okay, I was trained for any and all disabilities. For a week I temped for a deaf loan officer. That one was interesting." His accent has a slight tinge of Texas on it, but the overtones of Kansas happen to overshadow it.

Jim grabs a glazed donut and chomps down on it. He swallows quickly, half of the donut demolished. "So, I'm your new paper pusher. Anything you need, don't hesitate to ask."

She couldn't help the small chuckle that slipped out. Normally she was fairly serious but she had decided to relax her attitude today. There was no need to be so stern.

"That's very good," Ivy said with a nod. "I didn't want to have to spend time training you myself but I was prepared."

It was obvious she had been ready for pretty much anything.

"Well, I'm good at making good use of my time, Ms. Weaver. Now, there are a few matters I need to know. How do you take your coffee, do you smoke, what's your brand, and what good places are there for lunch runs around here? Oh, and any particular filing system your prefer?" Jim wanted to get all of this out of the way. He could figure it all out, but this was easier. A sip of his coffee and he realized it was cold. He used his pinky to check Ivy's cup on the side. Ice cold. A quick stare at the cup, and it was piping hot yet again. Hopefully she wouldn't notice.

"I have a binder that has the menus for all of my favorite places to get food from. They have directions and there should be a map. My last secretary needed it to figure out the best places for coffee. I take my coffee black. I don't smoke and I would request that you don't smoke near my office, my nose and eyes are sensitive to the smoke."

She hates the smell of cigars too. Not that she expects him to be smoking them. "I go in a reserve alphabetical order. It doesn't make sense to most but I do it for ease of access to some of the more colorful cases."

"Not to worry, then. I'll make sure it's all set up then. And I don't smoke, but my first boss smoked like a chimney, so I always ask."

"Good. I don't like the smell of people smoking," she said in a level voice. Then considered everything.

"It's good to have you on board. I hope we'll work well together, sadly I can't do this all on my own. I'll need you to stay sharp since I ah, tend to get caught up in my work before anything else. Sometimes you may need to remind me to eat. My doctor gets very annoyed when I forget to take care of my nutritional needs."
